UK car production tumbled 27% year-on-year in September 2025 to 51,090 units, the lowest for the month since 1952, after Jaguar Land Rover suffered a major cyberattack.
JLR, which produces about 1,000 vehicles daily across three UK plants, is gradually restoring operations after being forced to halt production for over five weeks.
Including commercial vehicles, output dropped an even steeper 36% following Stellantis NV’s earlier closure of its Vauxhall van plant in Luton.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “September’s performance comes as no surprise given the total loss of production at Britain’s biggest automotive employer after a cyber incident.
While the situation has improved, the sector remains under immense pressure.”
