The FTSE 100 edged 0.1% lower to trade around the 9,880 level during the shortened Christmas Eve session, as losses in healthcare and banking stocks weighed on the index.
HSBC fell 0.2%, AstraZeneca 0.7%, Unilever 0.3%, Rolls-Royce 0.8%, GSK 0.7%, Barclays 0.3% and Lloyds 0.2%.
By contrast, energy stocks found support from firmer oil prices.
BP gained 0.4% after agreeing to sell a 65% stake in Castrol to Stonepeak, while Shell rose 0.3%.
Trading volumes are expected to remain light, with the market set to close early.
