UK Gilt Yields Lowest in 10 Months

The UK 10-year gilt yield fell to around 4.4%, its lowest level since mid-December, as weaker-than-expected CPI data fueled speculation of early interest rate cuts by the BoE.

Headline inflation held steady at 3.8% in September, defying forecasts of an increase to 4%, with food price growth finally easing.

Meanwhile, core inflation rate slipped to 3.5% from 3.6%, also below expectations of 3.7%.

Although inflation remains nearly double BoE’s 2% target, the figures offered some relief for Chancellor Reeves.

Last week, she signaled plans to unveil “a range of policies” in the next budget aimed at “bearing down on some of the costs that people face.” Government borrowing reached £99.8 billion in the first half of the fiscal year, £7.2 billion above the OBR’s forecast.

Looking ahead, markets expect the BoE to begin cutting interest rates as soon as February, as inflation is expected to continue moderating and labor market data point to further signs of cooling.

UK 10-Year Gilt Yield Nears 2008 Peak
The UK’s 10-year gilt yield climbed to 4.9%, approaching its highest close since 2008, as soaring energy prices and hawkish signals from the Bank of England reignited expectations of three rate hikes in 2026. Brent crude and European gas prices extended multi-year highs, intensifying inflationary pressures on the UK economy. On Thursday, the BoE unanimously held rates at 3.75%, defying market expectations of a 7-2 split, while warning that the Middle East conflict could drive further spikes in global energy and commodity costs. The central bank now anticipates a near-term rebound in CPI inflation, reversing recent disinflation in domestic prices and wages. Meanwhile, UK public sector borrowing surged to £14.3 billion in February 2026, up from £12.1 billion a year earlier and well above forecasts of £8.5 billion. This marked the second-highest February borrowing on record, trailing only 2021.

UK Gilt Yield Surges Past 4.8% on BoE’s Hawkish Hold
The UK 10-year gilt yield climbed above 4.8%, reaching its highest level since September 2025 and nearing an over one-year peak, after the Bank of England unanimously voted to hold rates at 3.75%, a more hawkish stance than expected. Markets had anticipated a 7-2 split in favor of steady rates, but policymakers highlighted concerns over the Middle East conflict’s impact on surging global energy and commodity prices. The BoE now expects near-term CPI inflation to rise due to the fresh economic shock, reversing prior trends of disinflation in domestic prices and wages. In response, traders have fully priced in two rate hikes this year, intensifying bets on tighter monetary policy. On the economic data front, UK jobs data showed slower wage growth and unemployment holding at 5.2%, both missing expectations.
