The GfK Consumer Confidence Index in the United Kingdom edged up by 1 point to -19 in March 2025, marking its second consecutive monthly increase after readings of -22 in January and -20 in February.
The latest figure also exceeded market expectations of -21 but remained in negative territory, reflecting ongoing consumer caution.
Expectations for the general economic situation over the next 12 months improved by 2 points to -29, while sentiment regarding personal finances for the year ahead dipped by 1 point to +1.
Meanwhile, the major purchase index, which gauges confidence in buying big-ticket items, remained steady at -17.
Neil Bellamy, consumer insights director at NIQ GfK, noted: “Consumer confidence remains subdued, with a headline score of -19 for March.” He added that while the current stability is reassuring, “it wouldn’t take much to unsettle the fragile consumer mood.”
