UK car production fell 27.1% year-on-year in December 2024, totaling 45,022 units, marking the tenth straight month of decline.
This drop reflects the ongoing shift to EVs and decreased demand in key global markets.
Over the course of 2024, total car production decreased by 13.9% to 779,584 units, reaching the lowest annual output since 1954, aside from the pandemic period.
Domestic output for the UK market fell by 8% to 176,019 units, while exports dropped 15.5% to 603,565 units.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, explained that part of the decline stemmed from factory shutdowns as they transitioned to EV production.
He also noted the industry’s ongoing struggles with weak global demand and slower-than-expected growth in electric vehicle sales.
Exports to the EU and China were down by 24.3% and 21.8%, respectively, but exports to the US saw a notable increase of 38.5%.
Other significant export markets for the UK included Turkey, Japan, Australia, Canada, South Korea, UAE, and Israel.
