Japan’s GDP grew 0.4% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, slightly higher than flash data of 0.3% and in line with market forecasts.

It was the third straight quarter of expansion, amid an upward revision in government spending (1.7% vs 1.6% in the preliminary reading, after a 0.4% rise in Q1).

At the same time, business investment fell less than anticipated (-0.9% vs -1.2% in flash figures, after a 1.0% decline in Q1), suggesting relatively resilient corporate spending.

Meanwhile, external demand contributed positively (0.5 ppts), as exports rose (0.4% vs 1.7% in Q1) while imports fell (-1.7% vs 0.3%).

Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of the economy, was flat, matching the earlier estimate and reversing from 0.4% growth in Q1, as elevated cost pressures weighed on household spending.

Japan Q2 GDP Growth Below Estimates
Japan’s GDP grew 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, slowing from Q1’s pace and falling short of market expectations for 0.5%, flash data showed. Domestic demand subtracted 0.2 percentage points from growth, as private consumption was flat (vs 0.3% in Q1), missing estimates for a 0.5% increase amid persistent cost pressures.
