Japan’s GDP grew 0.3% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, slowing from Q1’s pace and falling short of market expectations for 0.5%, flash data showed.
Domestic demand subtracted 0.2 percentage points from growth, as private consumption was flat (vs 0.3% in Q1), missing estimates for a 0.5% increase.
Capital expenditure fell further (-1.2% vs -1.0%), reflecting weaker business sentiment and heightened uncertainty, compared with forecasts for a 0.4% gain.
Meanwhile, external demand contributed 0.5 percentage points to growth, as exports continued to rise (0.5% vs 1.7%), supporting overall growth.
Imports fell 1.5%, reversing a 0.3% increase in Q1.
Economists caution that growth may soften in the July–September quarter, as war-related price surges deepen the strain on household finances and corporate budgets.
