Japan's all industry activity index fell by 3.5 percent month-over-month in May 2020, after a revised 7.6 percent slump in April. This was the fourth straight month of contraction in activity, as the coronavirus health crisis ravaged business activity and global demand. Output dropped at a softer pace for both industrial production (-9.0 percent vs -9.8 percent in April) and tertiary industry activity (-2.2 percent vs -7.7 percent). Meantime, construction activity declined by 2.8 percent, after a 0.1 percent rise in April. On a yearly basis, the all industry activity index plunged 17.4 percent in May, after a revised 13 percent tumble in April.
