Japan's annual inflation rate accelerated to 2.1% in September 2026 from 1.9% in the previous two months, marking the highest level since December 2025.
Price growth quickened for transport (2.5% vs 2.3% in August), housing (1.1% vs 1.0%), household goods (6.5% vs 4.9%), recreation (3.9% vs 2.2%), and miscellaneous items (1.2% vs 0.7%).
Meanwhile, food inflation eased to its lowest level since February 2022 (2.8% vs 3.1%), while inflation moderated for clothing (1.2% vs 1.5%) and healthcare (2.8% vs 3.0%).
Elsewhere, gas inflation accelerated (2.4% vs 2.0%), but electricity prices continued to decline (-2.4% vs -2.4%), partly reflecting government energy subsidies.
Education prices remained in deflation (-3.8% vs -3.8%).
Core inflation, which excludes fresh food, climbed to 2.1% from 1.7% in August, exceeding the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for the first time in nine months.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat, after rising 0.1% in August.
