Japan Jobless Rate Steady at 2.5% for Third Straight Month

Japan's unemployment rate held steady at 2.5% in June 2026, unchanged for a third consecutive month and in line with market expectations, remaining at its lowest level since July 2025.

The number of unemployed rose by 10 thousand to 1.75 million, while employment fell by 360 thousand to a three-month low of 68.46 million.

The labor force also shrank by 350 thousand to 70.22 million, suggesting the stable jobless rate was largely driven by a smaller workforce rather than stronger hiring.

Meanwhile, the number of people outside the labor force increased by 430 thousand to a three-month high of 39.39 million.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the labor force participation rate eased to 64.4% from 64.6% in May, though it remained above 64.2% recorded a year earlier.

Separately, the jobs-to-applicants ratio unexpectedly edged up to 1.18 from 1.17, slightly exceeding market forecasts and indicating labor demand remained resilient despite softer employment figures.

The labor force also increased by 20 thousand to an all-time high of 70.57 million. Meanwhile, the number of people outside the labor force declined by 40 thousand to a record low of 38.96 million. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the labor force participation rate edged up to 64.6%, from 64.4% in April and 64.0% a year earlier, indicating continued improvement in labor market participation. At the same time, the jobs-to-applicants ratio slipped to 1.17 from 1.18 in both March and April, marking the lowest reading in five months and suggesting hiring demand softened slightly despite the still-tight labor market.

Japan Jobless Rate Unexpectedly Eases
Japan’s unemployment rate fell to 2.5% in April 2026, below both market expectations and March’s 2.7% reading. The figure marked the lowest jobless rate since July 2025, as the number of unemployed decreased by 70 thousand to an eight-month low of 1.79 million. Meantime, employment jumped by 610 thousand to a record high of 68.76 million, while the labor force increased 53 thousand to a record 70.55 million. The number of people outside the labor force declined by 540 thousand to a record low of 39.00 million. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the labor force participation rate was up to 64.4% from 63.6% in March and 63.7% a year earlier. Simultaneously, the jobs-to-applicants ratio held steady at 1.18, in line with forecasts.
