Core consumer prices in Tokyo’s central wards increased 2.6% year-on-year in October 2026, following a 2.7% rise in September and in line with expectations.
It was the first deceleration in five months, following the fastest increase since November 2025 in September.
However, the latest reading remained above the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) 2% target ahead of the central bank’s monetary policy decision later today.
Meanwhile, the CPI, which excludes volatile fresh food and energy costs and is viewed by the BoJ as a better gauge of underlying inflation, rose 2.6% year-on-year, down from 2.9% in September and below forecasts of 2.7%.
The BoJ raised its policy rate by 25 bps to 1.25% at its September meeting, the highest level since April 1995, in response to persistent inflation driven by higher oil prices amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.
