Japan’s industrial production rose 1.9% month-over-month in June 2026, exceeding flash data of 1.3% and picking up from a 0.1% increase in the previous month.

It marked the third consecutive monthly expansion and the strongest growth since January, as manufacturing activity continued to recover amid easing supply chain disruptions and moderating energy cost pressures tied to prolonged Middle East tensions.

Output rebounded sharply for production machinery (7.7% vs -3.5% in May), electrical machinery and information and communication electronics equipment (5.5% vs -5.1%), and general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (4.7% vs -6.0%).

Meanwhile, production declined for electronic parts and devices (-6.1% vs 1.2%) and iron, steel, and non-ferrous metals (-0.4% vs 0.3%).

On an annual basis, industrial output grew by 4.9%, reversing a 2.1% decline in May and marking the strongest rise sice September 2022.

Japan Industrial Output Unexpectedly Rises
Japan’s industrial production edged up 0.1% month-over-month in July 2026, defying market expectations for a 0.6% decline and extending gains for a fourth straight month, preliminary data showed. The result followed June’s 1.9% increase, the fastest pace in five months, suggesting continued resilience in manufacturing despite external uncertainties and uneven global demand. Growth was led by production machinery (5.1% vs 7.7% in June), inorganic and organic chemicals (6.0% vs 2.6%), and electronic parts and devices (2.6% vs -6.1%). These gains were partly offset by declines in transport equipment excluding motor vehicles (-4.7% vs 2.0%), fabricated metals (-3.2% vs 2.2%), and plastic products (-1.1% vs 4.5%). On an annual basis, industrial output rose 4.1%, slowing from 4.9% in June but marking a second consecutive month of growth.
