Japan 10-Year Yield Eases from 30-Year High

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield slipped below 3.1% on Friday, easing from 30-year highs and tracking a retreat in Treasury yields as concerns over France’s fiscal and political outlook boosted demand for safe-haven assets.

Still, Japanese yields remained supported by strong economic data, with Tokyo’s core inflation rising 2.7% in September and exceeding the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for the first time in nine months.

However, a summary of opinions from the central bank’s September meeting provided fewer hawkish signals than investors had expected.

The summary indicated that policymakers had shifted their focus toward preventing inflation from overshooting the target, suggesting another rate hike could come this year, though it offered little guidance on the timing.

Japanese bonds also remained under pressure from the government’s ambitious spending plans and deteriorating fiscal conditions.

Japan 10-Year Yield Rises on Hawkish BOJ Outlook
Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed above 3.1% on Thursday, returning to 30-year highs as strong economic data and hawkish signals from the Bank of Japan reinforced expectations for a faster pace of policy tightening. Central bank data showed manufacturing sentiment improved in the third quarter to its highest level in more than eight years, while overall business conditions reached their most favorable levels in decades. Meanwhile, a summary of opinions from the BOJ’s September meeting showed that policymakers saw a need to accelerate the pace of rate hikes or move them closer to the central bank’s target in the near term. Japanese bonds have also faced sustained selling pressure since the election of Prime Minister Sane Takaichi, amid ambitious spending plans and worsening fiscal conditions. Recent reports suggested that PM Takaichi would pledge a flexible response to unexpected market movements in a policy speech scheduled for next week.
