Japan 10Y Bond Yield Hits 4-week High

Japan 10 Year Government Bond Yield increased to 2.24%, the highest since February 2026. Over the past 4 weeks, Japan 10Y Bond Yield gained 2.23 basis points, and in the last 12 months, it increased 70.89 basis points.

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield rose above 2.21% on Friday, nearing one-month highs after Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda warned that a weak yen could amplify imported inflation as oil prices climb, potentially pressuring the central bank to accelerate policy normalization. Ueda noted that the impact of exchange rates on inflation appears larger than in the past, giving them greater weight in policymakers’ decisions. Oil prices surged after Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, pledged to keep the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed while Tehran stepped up attacks on regional oil and transport facilities. The Middle East conflict showed no signs of easing, with defiant rhetoric from leaders in Tehran and Washington signaling that the Iran war remains far from de-escalation after nearly two weeks of fighting.

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield held steady around 2.18% on Thursday, trading sideways through the week as investors contended with mounting risks from the Middle East conflict and volatile oil prices. Oil surged for a second day as the prospect of a protracted Iran war overshadowed a coordinated release of oil reserves by major economies, with the IEA approving its largest-ever release of 400 million barrels of oil. That includes 172 million barrels from the US, while Japan will release 80 million barrels from its reserves. Japan remains highly exposed to oil supply shocks due to its reliance on Middle Eastern energy imports, though it stands ready to tap emergency reserves to offset disruptions. Meanwhile, a sale of Japan’s five-year government bonds this week drew stronger demand than the 12-month average, reflecting fading expectations of a potential Bank of Japan rate hike.
