Japan Current Account Surplus Above Estimates

Japan’s current account surplus rose to JPY 3,436.4 billion in May 2025 from JPY 2,949.5 billion a year earlier, beating market expectations for a gain of JPY 2,940 billion.
The services account swung to a surplus of JPY 201.1 billion from a JPY 51.6 billion deficit in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the goods account deficit narrowed sharply to JPY 522.3 billion from JPY 1,098.6 billion, as exports fell just 1.4% compared to a steeper 7.5% drop in imports.
Simultaneously, the primary income surplus slipped to JPY 4,255.5 billion from JPY 4,372.5 billion, and the secondary income deficit widened to JPY 497.9 billion from JPY 273.3 billion.
For fiscal year 2024, the current account surplus climbed to a record JPY 30.38 trillion, following an advance of JPY 26.17 trillion in the prior year.
