Japan's consumer confidence index edged down to 35.4 in September 2026 from August’s six-month high of 35.5, slightly beating market expectations of 35.3.

Sentiment weakened in two of the four major components, with households reporting weaker views on overall livelihood (33.8 vs 34.1 in August) and willingness to purchase durable goods (27.3 vs 27.5).

Meanwhile, sentiment improved regarding income growth (40.5 vs 40.4 in August) and employment prospects (40.0 vs 39.9).
