China Stocks Fall on Geopolitical Jitters, AI Weakness

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.4% to 3,951 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component declined 0.5% to 14,249, as investor sentiment weakened amid fading optimism over a near-term easing of US-Iran tensions.

Market caution intensified after US President Donald Trump demanded that Iran compensate victims of conflicts involving Tehran, while Iranian officials sought reparations for damage caused by recent US and Israeli strikes.

The renewed diplomatic impasse dampened expectations for a swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns that disruptions to shipping through the waterway could persist and continue to weigh on global risk appetite.

Market sentiment was also pressured by renewed selling in AI-related stocks, as investors rotated into more defensive sectors amid increasing volatility in the AI trade.

Leading declines included Zhongji Innolight (-6.0%), Eoptolink Technology (-5.1%), Cambricon Technologies (-2.1%), Hygon Information Technology (-1.6%), and SMIC (-1.1%).

Shanghai Stocks Hit Near 1-Month High
The Shanghai Composite rose 0.67% to close at a near one-month high of 3,966.6 on Monday, while the Shenzhen Component traded flat around 14,317, as investors assessed soft inflation data that reinforced expectations of continued policy support for the economy. Annual consumer inflation slowed to a six-month low of 0.5% in July, driven by further declines in food prices and slower growth in non-food costs. Producer price inflation also eased to 3.5% from 4.1%, marking its first slowdown since turning positive in March following the oil-price surge linked to the Iran conflict. China's leaders vowed to bolster economic growth through faster infrastructure spending, seeking to offset persistent weakness in domestic demand despite resilient exports and factory activity. Kweichow Moutai (3.03%), China Mobile (1.26%), and Foxconn Industrial Internet (1.47%) were among the top gainers. Conversely, tech names such as Zhongji Innolight (-6.01%) and Eoptolink Technology (-5.07%) lagged behind.
