Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.62% to close at 64,916 on Monday, extending last week’s decline as technology shares remained under pressure amid amid lingering concerns over the AI trade.

Investors are increasingly questioning whether massive spending on AI infrastructure will deliver adequate returns, particularly as Japanese companies maintain significant exposure to the global AI expansion.

However, selling pressure eased as US stock futures rebounded sharply following Friday’s steep losses.

Major decliners included Taiyo Yuden (-4.9%), SoftBank Group (-2%), Lasertec (-3.9%), Ibiden Co. (-2.6%), and Tokyo Electron (-2.6%).

Kioxia shares also remained vulnerable after reports revealed that outstanding leveraged long positions in the stock reached approximately ¥920 billion last week, the highest among companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, investors are awaiting upcoming trade and inflation data for further insight into the health of Japan’s economy.
