Japanese Shares Gain for Second Session

The Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.6% to above 66,000 on Wednesday, extending gains from the previous session as falling oil prices eased concerns over higher inflation in the near term.

Japanese stocks also tracked gains on Wall Street overnight as long-term Treasury yields declined sharply, while investors awaited greater clarity on the US government’s fiscal reform plans.

Meanwhile, traders looked ahead to chip giant Nvidia’s earnings report later in the global day for fresh clues on the strength of artificial intelligence-related demand.

Among individual stocks, notable gains came from Advantest (2%), SoftBank Group (2.7%) and Mitsubishi UFJ (1.6%).

In corporate news, Terra Drone surged more than 20% after Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency selected the aircraft company to supply the Japan Self-Defense Forces with its Terra B1 interceptor drone under a fast-tracked program aimed at strengthening counter-uncrewed aircraft capabilities.

Japanese Shares Fall as Tech Stocks Weigh

The declines came despite a rebound in US technology stocks on Wall Street overnight, as long-term Treasury yields retreated from recent highs and lower oil prices eased inflation concerns. Meanwhile, investors awaited chip giant Nvidia’s earnings report later in the global day for fresh indications of the strength of AI-related demand. Notable tech decliners in Japan included Kioxia Holdings (-1.5%), Fujikura (-1.6%), Advantest (-1.7%), Taiyo Yuden (-3%) and Tokyo Electron (-1.9%). In contrast, financial stocks outperformed, led by gains in Mitsubishi UFJ (0.9%), Sumitomo Mitsui (1.1%) and Mizuho Financial (0.8%).

The Nikkei 225 Index Closes 0.31% Higher
The Nikkei 225 Index gained 200 points or 0.31 percent on Tuesday to close at 65729 points. Gains were led by Furukawa Electric (9.66%), Fujikura (5.72%) and Citizen Holdings (4.01%). Biggest losers were Yokohama Rubber (-3.75%), Tokyo Electric Power (-3.41%) and Honda Motor (-3.21%).
