Japan Producer Inflation Highest in 10 Months

Producer prices in Japan increased by 2.9% yoy in June 2024, quickening from an upwardly revised 2.6% growth in the prior month and aligning with market estimates.
It was the 41st straight month of producer inflation and the highest level since August 2023, amid further rises in the cost of transport equipment (1.6% vs 1.8% in May), beverages & food (2.8% vs 3.3%), chemicals (1.7% vs 0.8%), petroleum & coal (4.5% vs 6.9%), electrical machinery (3.6% vs 3.2%), production machinery (3.9% vs 4.3%), metal products (3.6% vs 3.2%), other manufacturing (4.1% vs 4.7%), general-purpose machinery (3.0% vs 2.8%), non-ferrous metals (19.4% vs 20.9%), business-oriented machinery (2.3% vs 2.6%), information (3.1% vs 2.3%), and plastic products (1.2% vs 1.1%).
At the same time, the cost of iron & steel was flat after edging down 0.1% in May.
Monthly, producer prices rose by 0.2%, the least since February, after a 0.7% gain in May.
