Japanese Yields Follow Treasury Yields Lower

2026-08-20 02:25 By Jam Kaimo Samonte 1 min. read

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield fell to around 2.83% on Thursday after reaching a 30-year high of 2.95% earlier this week, tracking Treasury yields lower as the US government moved to rein in long-term borrowing costs through an expanded buyback program.

The US Treasury Department said it would at least double the size of liquidity-support buyback operations covering securities with maturities from 10 to 30 years, as the recent surge in yields heightened concerns over market liquidity and stability.

Meanwhile, traders are increasingly speculating that the Bank of Japan could raise interest rates as soon as September, with a growing number of policymakers calling for a stronger response to mounting inflationary pressures.

On the data front, Japan’s trade deficit widened sharply in July as imports surged to a record high on increased crude oil purchases, while export growth remained robust, supported by strong demand for AI-related chips.

Japan 10-Year Yield Scales Fresh 30-Year High
Japan’s 10-year government bond yield climbed to as high as 2.95% this week, reaching levels last seen in 1996 amid mounting fiscal concerns and growing expectations for an imminent interest rate hike from the Bank of Japan. The Takaichi administration’s plan to cut the consumption tax on food to 1% for two years has fueled market concerns, as the government has yet to identify an alternative revenue source and the measure is viewed as an ineffective response to inflation that may not deliver lasting price stability. Traders are also increasingly speculating on a BOJ rate hike as soon as September, after a growing number of policymakers called for a stronger response to mounting inflationary pressures. The central bank is also contending with persistent yen weakness and elevated energy costs driven by the Middle East conflict, which could further intensify inflationary pressures.

Japan 10-Year Yield Hits 30-Year High
Japan’s 10-year government bond yield jumped to 2.93% on Monday, reaching its highest level since 1996 amid growing expectations for an imminent Bank of Japan interest rate hike despite weaker-than-expected GDP data. Traders are speculating that the BOJ could raise rates as soon as September after a growing number of policymakers called for a stronger response to mounting inflationary pressures. The central bank is also contending with persistent yen weakness, which could add to inflationary pressures. Fiscal concerns are also weighing on the market, with the government yet to explain how it will fund its proposed two-year food sales tax cut. Meanwhile, Japan’s economy expanded at an annualized 1.1% in Q2, below market expectations of 2%, as weak domestic demand offset strong exports. Earlier this month, the BOJ released its economic activity outlook and marginally raised its GDP growth forecast to 0.6% from 0.5% for the 2026 fiscal year ending in March 2027.
