German Car Registrations Rise as EV Demand Surges

Germany’s new car registrations rose 2.6% year-on-year to 212,563 units in August 2026.
Private registrations surged 16.9%, accounting for 40.5% of the market, while commercial registrations fell 5.3%, representing 59.4%.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded the strongest growth, with registrations jumping 75.1% to 68,930 units, lifting their market share to 32.4%.
By contrast, gasoline registrations plunged 37.9% to a 16.7% share, while diesel registrations fell 17.3%, accounting for 10.6%.
In the first eight months of 2026, total new car registrations reached 1.97 million, up 4.8% from the same period a year earlier.
