Germany 10Y Bond Yield Hits 15-year High

Germany’s 10-year Bund yield held around 3.20%, remaining close to its highest level in more than 15 years as investors assessed the risk that a prolonged Middle East conflict could keep inflationary pressures elevated. Although Brent crude has retreated from its recent peak near $100 a barrel in July, it remains about 45% higher since the start of the year, adding to concerns over energy-driven inflation. Tensions intensified after Iran called on the US to accept defeat, while President Donald Trump warned Americans to expect persistently high fuel prices as the conflict continues. Markets are increasingly pricing a tighter path for European monetary policy, with the ECB deposit rate seen at 2.76% by March 2027 versus the current 2.25%, alongside more than a 90% probability of a September rate hike. In the US, softer economic indicators have reduced expectations for an imminent Fed rate hike.

Germany’s 10-year Bund yield has been swinging around 3.1% in August, tracking US Treasury yields, as traders navigate shifting developments in the Middle East and conflicting signals over the prospects of a deal between the US and Iran, while also assessing the resulting rise in oil prices and its impact on inflation. In Europe, market-based measures of inflation expectations, reflected in swaps for the Euro Area over the next year, are around 2.4%, above the ECB’s 2% target. Eurozone inflation edged up to 2.9% in July. Meanwhile, the Euro Area economic outlook has improved, with recent resilience prompting analysts to become more optimistic about growth. The Eurozone economy expanded 0.4% in Q2, the strongest pace since early 2025 and growth is projected to moderate in the near term before gradually gaining momentum. As a result, investors expect the ECB to deliver another 25bps rate hike in September.
