Germany’s Ifo Business Climate Index rose to 89.9 in September 2026, the highest reading since May 2023 and comfortably above the market expectation of 89.0, suggesting that business sentiment in Europe’s largest economy is continuing to improve despite an energy price shock that has pushed fuel costs to record highs.

The expectations index climbed to 90.4 from 89.0, while the current conditions index rose to 89.5 from 88.5.

By sector, sentiment improved among manufacturers (-2.8 vs. -4.2), driven by significantly stronger expectations, particularly in the electrical equipment industry, although firms assessed current conditions somewhat less favorably.

Sentiment also strengthened among service providers (0.7 vs. -2.1), with firms more satisfied with their current business, and traders (-17.2 vs. -20.5), reflecting improvements in both current conditions and expectations.

Meanwhile, confidence in construction was broadly unchanged amid prospects of higher interest rates.
