China Stocks Rebound on Oil Retreat, Tech Gains

2026-09-18 02:11 By Joshua Ferrer 1 min. read

The Shanghai Composite rose 0.5% to around 3,900, while the Shenzhen Component gained 0.8% to 13,500 on Friday, rebounding from the previous session as easing oil prices improved risk sentiment, while markets watched the upcoming high-level US-China talks.

Both benchmarks are also on track for modest weekly gains as concerns over Middle East supply disruptions eased, with Saudi Arabia working to restore flows through its East-West pipeline and hopes growing for renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Meanwhile, growing AI competition and access to advanced US chips is widely expected to be the central topic in the upcoming meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, while investors await progress on tariffs, China’s rare-earth export restrictions, the yuan and a possible extension of the trade truce due to expire in November.

Technology stocks led the advance, with CXMT, Foxconn, Zhongji Innolight and Cambricon up 1% to 3%, while the banking sector mostly declined.

China Stocks Slip as US-China Talks Loom
The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.41% to close at 3,875.6 on Thursday, while the Shenzhen Component fell 0.33% to 13,409.9, reversing gains from the previous session as investors turned cautious ahead of high-level US-China talks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng this weekend for final preparatory discussions before the September 24 summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in the US. While the upcoming meetings are expected to help improve relations between the world’s two largest economies, investors remained cautious amid lingering uncertainties over tariffs, sanctions and geopolitical tensions, including those involving Taiwan and the Middle East. Energy stocks were also among the top laggards, including PetroChina (-1.67%), CNOOC (-2.39%) and Sinopec (-1.54%). In contrast, BYD climbed 1.2% after reports that Chinese officials may include the automaker in Xi Jinping’s business delegation for his summit with Trump.
