Shanghai Stocks Hit Over 1-Month High

2026-08-18 02:13 By Czyrill Jean Coloma 1 min. read

The Shanghai Composite rose 0.2% to an over one-month high of around 3,991 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component fell 0.6% to 14,613, with markets turning choppy after recent gains in technology and semiconductor stocks.

Sentiment in the sector has recently been buoyed by strong corporate earnings and Beijing’s continued push to develop a self-sufficient semiconductor industry, with Huawei and CXMT making notable progress in chip development.

Meanwhile, caution lingered after July economic data highlighted a weak start to the second half of the year, with fixed-asset investment, industrial production, and retail sales all falling short of expectations.

Technology, semiconductor, and AI-related shares posted declines, including Hygon Information Technology (-1.3%), SMIC (-0.4%), Giga Device Semiconductor (-0.4%), and Eoptolink Technology (-1%).

In contrast, PetroChina (1.2%) and CNOOC (1.5%) outperformed on higher oil prices amid fading hopes for a Middle East peace deal.

China Stocks Climb to Over 1-Month High
The Shanghai Composite climbed 1.41% to close at 3,982.7 on Monday, while the Shenzhen Component jumped 2.44% to 14,704.3, both reaching their highest levels in more than a month as technology stocks staged strong gains. Cambricon Technologies (5.76%), Zhongji Innolight (6.15%), Eoptolink Technology (4.15%), NAURA Technology (3.7%), SMIC (2.93%), and Hygon Information Technology (2.78%) were among the top performers after SMIC reported that its Q2 profit more than tripled from a year earlier, while Hygon Information Technology posted solid growth in revenue, net profit, and R&D spending. Meanwhile, a fresh batch of economic data underscored a sluggish start to the second half of the year, with fixed-asset investment, industrial output, and retail sales all missing forecasts. The NBS said economic activity had remained "generally stable" this year but warned that the external environment remains "complicated and volatile" while domestic demand continues to lack momentum.
