New yuan loans extended by Chinese banks rose by a net CNY 1,080 billion in September of 2026, below the CNY 1,290 billion extended in the corresponding period of the previous year and broadly in line with market expectations of a CNY 975 billion increase.
The result maintained the current trend of sharp contractions in bank credit to Chinese households and businesses amid a slowing economy and weak consumer demand, particularly for housing.
In turn, total social financing, a broader measure of credit in the Chinese financial system, rose by CNY 3,550 billion, close to the CNY 3,530 billion recorded last year and ahead of market expectations of CNY 3,270 billion.
This underscored the ongoing shift away from traditional sectors of the economy toward tech, which commonly raises cash in the bond market instead of through bank loans.
