Brazil New-Vehicle Nears 12-year High

Brazil’s new-vehicle sales rebounded 2.3% month over month to 281,400 units in September after falling 1.6% in August, marking the highest monthly volume since December 2014.

The increase was driven by strong growth in passenger-car and light-commercial-vehicle sales.

Passenger-car sales rose 1.6% to 216,600 units, while light-commercial-vehicle sales grew 4.4% to 52,200 units.

Electrified vehicles also supported the market, accounting for 20.1% of new light-vehicle registrations in Brazil in 2026.

Heavy-vehicle sales also increased, with truck sales up 2.2% to 10,200 units and bus sales jumping 17.1% to 2,400 units.

Anfavea revised up its 2026 forecasts for vehicle sales and production, now expecting the domestic market to reach 3.1 million registered vehicles this year.

Brazil Auto Sales Slip in August
Brazil’s new-vehicle sales fell 1.6% month over month to 275,100 units in August 2026, following a 2.6% increase in July. August had two fewer business days. Light-vehicle sales totaled 263,100 units, with passenger cars up 0.2% to 213,100, while light commercial vehicles fell 5.5% to 50,000. Heavy-vehicle sales totaled 12,000 units, as truck sales slumped 14.1% to 10,000 and bus sales dropped 9.4% to 2,000. Electrified vehicles reached a record 24.4% share, including a record 25,900 fully electric vehicles. Average daily sales were 13,100 units, the second-highest level this year, behind May’s 13,700. Year to date, sales reached 1.975 million units, up 18.4% year-on-year. The 2 million-unit mark was reached in early September, one month earlier than in 2025.

Brazil's new vehicle sales rose 2.6% month-over-month to 279.5 thousand units in July 2026, rebounding from a 0.8% decline in June, marking the highest level since December 2014. Electrified vehicles continued to gain market share, accounting for 23.5% of total registrations, up from less than 11% a year earlier, rising to record registrations of 25.8 thousand fully electric vehicles. Truck sales continued to recover, rising 19.4%, aided by financing incentives under the Move Brasil program, while bus sales remained weak, slowing to 1.9% from 36.7% in the prior month, and down 10.7% so far this year due to delays in the Caminhos da Escola program. Compared with a year earlier, sales jumped 14.9%, marking the strongest monthly performance of 2026 despite the school holiday period. In the first seven months of 2026, total vehicle sales exceeded 1.7 million units, up 17.9% from a year earlier, as sales of electrified models surged 120.8%.
