Brazil Auto Sales Slip in August

Brazil’s new-vehicle sales fell 1.6% month over month to 275,100 units in August 2026, following a 2.6% increase in July. August had two fewer business days. Light-vehicle sales totaled 263,100 units, with passenger cars up 0.2% to 213,100, while light commercial vehicles fell 5.5% to 50,000. Heavy-vehicle sales totaled 12,000 units, as truck sales slumped 14.1% to 10,000 and bus sales dropped 9.4% to 2,000. Electrified vehicles reached a record 24.4% share, including a record 25,900 fully electric vehicles. Average daily sales were 13,100 units, the second-highest level this year, behind May’s 13,700. Year to date, sales reached 1.975 million units, up 18.4% year-on-year. The 2 million-unit mark was reached in early September, one month earlier than in 2025.

Truck sales continued to recover, rising 19.4%, aided by financing incentives under the Move Brasil program, while bus sales remained weak, slowing to 1.9% from 36.7% in the prior month, and down 10.7% so far this year due to delays in the Caminhos da Escola program. Compared with a year earlier, sales jumped 14.9%, marking the strongest monthly performance of 2026 despite the school holiday period. In the first seven months of 2026, total vehicle sales exceeded 1.7 million units, up 17.9% from a year earlier, as sales of electrified models surged 120.8%.

Brazil's new vehicle sales edged down 0.8% month-over-month to 272,500 units in June 2026 after surging 10.6% in May. A new Provisional Measure introduced a government-backed discount program for new vehicles aimed at promoting sustainability and fleet renewal. Its effects only began to emerge in the final week of June but were enough to make it the second-best sales month of the year. Around 79,000 discounted vehicles had been delivered to dealerships but were not yet registered, pointing to stronger sales in July. Passenger car sales fell 0.8%, while light commercial vehicle sales declined 4.9%. In contrast, truck sales rose 15.9% and bus sales jumped 36.7%.
