South Africa Gold Production Eases in January

Gold production in South Africa increased by 0.7% year-on-year in January 2026, easing sharply from an upwardly revised 2% in the previous month.

This marked the second consecutive month of growth in gold production, albeit at a slower pace, and it contributed 0.1 percentage point to overall mining output growth.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, gold production grew by 0.6%, slowing from a 7.4% growth in December 2025.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, gold production surged by 7.4%, recovering strongly from a sharp 10.3% decline in November.

Gold production in South Africa fell 1.2% year-on-year in October 2025, reversing a 5.9% surge in September. The decline shaved 0.1 percentage point off overall year-on-year growth in total mining output. On a seasonally adjusted basis, gold production declined 3.7% in October, following a 6.6% gain the previous month.
