Frankfurt's DAX 40 traded slightly down around 25,550 on Wednesday, as investors weighed mixed corporate earnings ahead of the Fed’s monetary policy decision later in the day.
Market sentiment was further pressured by oil prices, which rose again amid ongoing tensions and following a media report about possible US attacks on Iran after the US midterm elections in early November.
Symrise plunged as much as 12%, making it the worst performer, as it flagged slower year-end organic growth and margin pressure, despite delivering stronger sales volumes and a modest quarterly growth beat.
Meanwhile, BASF shares turned lower despite stronger results and upgraded guidance, amid reports that Evonik had rejected an initial takeover bid.
On the upside, Deutsche Bank gained more than 3% after reporting third-quarter profits above market expectations.
