Frankfurt’s DAX 40 closed marginally up at 25,254 on Monday, as signs of growing political instability in Europe kept investors cautious, despite relief from lower oil prices.
Early today, Spain’s prime minister called an early election after Parliament rejected his government’s housing emergency measures on Friday.
This development added to concerns over French fiscal policy and the country’s high level of public debt.
Meanwhile, geopolitical risks remain elevated.
Among key movers, shares of the defense companies Rheinmetall and Hensoldt climbed by 2.5% and 4.3%, respectively, after Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a new aid package for Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kyiv.
Other top gainers included Fresenius Medical Care, GEA Group, Volkswagen, Brenntag, Mercedes-Benz Group, Deutsche Telekom and Continental, each rising more than 1%.
On the flip side, Bayer (-2.5%), Heidelberg Materials (-1.8%) and Infineon Technologies (-1.7%) posted the biggest losses.
