DAX Slips Again

2026-04-20 07:44 By Luisa Carvalho 1 min. read

Frankfurt's DAX 40 fell more than 1% to around 24,400 on Monday, pressured by renewed tensions in the Middle East over the weekend.

Iran reversed its decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reimposed restrictions on the strategic waterway after Washington signaled it would maintain its blockade of Iranian ports.

US forces later seized an Iranian cargo ship it accused of violating its naval restrictions.

The developments come as US negotiators travel to Pakistan for a second round of talks on the eve of the truce’s expiration, with Tehran threatening to boycott the process.

As a result, oil prices rose again, reigniting concerns about inflationary pressures and the broader outlook for economic growth.

Most sectors saw declines, with travel, industrials and tech sectors among the hardest hit.

Lufthansa dropped over 3% on the back of higher oil prices and concerns over jet fuel reserves.

SAP, MTU Aero Engines, Deutsche Bank and Siemens Energy also posted steep losses, up to 3.3%.

DAX Rallies to 7-Week High
The DAX jumped more than 2% to close near 24,700 on Friday, its highest level since February 27, after Iran said the Strait of Hormuz had been fully reopened to commercial shipping. The sharp rebound followed signals from US President Donald Trump suggesting the war could be nearing an end, adding to improving risk sentiment. Sentiment was further supported by a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that came into effect on Thursday, helping lift global equity markets. Infineon surged more than 6%, while Airbus gained nearly 5%. Siemens and Siemens Energy both advanced over 3%, and SAP along with Deutsche Bank rose more than 2.5%. Gains were also seen in Deutsche Telekom, Allianz and Munich Re. In contrast, utilities and select industrial names lagged, with RWE falling 4% and E.ON down nearly 2%. Mercedes-Benz slipped close to 2%, while Rheinmetall edged 0.6% lower.
