German Imports Slump

Germany’s imports tumbled 5.9% month-on-month to a 17-month low of €109.2 billion in January 2026, reversing a marginally revised 1.3% rise in the previous month and pointing to weaker domestic demand at the start of the year amid mounting economic headwinds.
Purchases from EU partners fell 6.5%, weighed by declines from both euro area members (-5.9%) and non-euro-area countries (-7.8%).
Also, imports from non-EU countries tumbled 8.2%, dragged by lower purchases from the U.S.
(-8.2%), China (-8.3%), and Russia (-20.0%).
In contrast, purchases from the United Kingdom grew 2.5%.
On an annual basis, total imports declined -6.4%.
In 2025, purchases increased 4.4%.
