Germany Current Account Surplus Widens in July

Germany's current account surplus widened to €21.2 billion in July 2026 compared with €10.9 billion in the same period a year earlier. The goods account surplus widened to €21 billion from €16.4 billion a year earlier, while the services deficit narrowed to €8.3 billion from €9.7 billion. In contrast, the secondary income deficit widened to €6.7 billion from €5.5 billion, while the primary income surplus narrowed slightly to €15 billion from €15.7 billion. In the first seven months of 2026, the current account surplus widened to €129 billion from €123 billion in the same period of 2026.

Germany’s current account surplus reached €19 billion in June 2026, widening from a surplus of €17.2 in the same period a year earlier. The goods surplus increased to €17.3 billion from €15.4 billion, while the primary income surplus was broadly unchanged at €13.96 billion. The secondary income deficit narrowed slightly to €4.99 billion from €5.1 billion, partly offsetting a wider services deficit of €7.2 billion versus €7.1 billion a year earlier. In the first half of 2026, the current account surplus narrowed slightly to €106.3 billion from €107.2 billion in the same period of 2025.

Germany’s current account surplus reached €10.4 billion in May 2026, the smallest in a year but still above the €5.9 billion recorded in May 2025. The primary income surplus shifted to €5.7 billion, compared to a €2.3 billion deficit in May 2025. The goods surplus remained nearly unchanged at €15.4 billion, down slightly from €15.8 billion, as exports rose 0.6% to €112.9 billion and imports increased 1.1% to €97.5 billion. Meanwhile, the services deficit widened to €7.2 billion from €5.9 billion, and the secondary income gap grew to €3.5 billion from €1.6 billion. For January–May 2026, the current account surplus narrowed slightly to €88.7 billion from €90 billion.
