China Stocks Fall as Earnings Disappoint

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.60% to close at 3,713 on Wednesday, while the Shenzhen Component dropped 0.82% to 11,704.4, as disappointing corporate earnings weighed on investor sentiment.

CATL slumped 12.03% to its lowest level in more than a year after the Chinese battery giant reported significantly slower profit growth in Q3, dragged down by rising costs, intense competition and slower growth in China’s auto sales.

Consumer and energy stocks such as Kweichow Moutai (-1.67%), Wuliangye Yibin (-1.17%) and PetroChina (-2.26%) also came under pressure as concerns over weak domestic demand and fading stimulus hopes weighed on sentiment.

China’s economy grew 4.5% yoy in Q3 2026, accelerating from a three-year low in Q2 and beating expectations, largely driven by strong export growth amid solid global demand for Chinese high-tech products due to the AI infrastructure boom.

China Stocks Slide to Over 2-Month Low
The Shanghai Composite lost 1.5% to 3,602 on Friday, while the Shenzhen Component slid 2.1% to 11,118, with both indexes hitting their lowest levels in more than two months as steep losses in semiconductor and technology stocks weighed on the market. The selloff tracked broader losses across Asian markets following overnight declines on Wall Street, weighed down by mounting concerns over the sustainability of AI spending and its potential returns. The downturn is putting China’s market-support efforts to the test, as state-backed buying proves insufficient to stem the slide, momentum deteriorates, and investors remain reluctant to step in based on valuations alone. Notable laggards included Cambricon Technologies (-3.7%), SMIC (-2.9%), Zhongji Innolight (-3.6%), Eoptolink Technology (-6.1%) and NAURA Technology (-1.9%). Over the week, both indexes are set to post sharp losses.

China Stocks Track Asian Peers Lower
The Shanghai Composite fell 1.5% to close at 3,658 on Thursday, while the Shenzhen Component dropped 3% to a more than two-month low of 11,357, tracking broader Asian market losses as the technology-led rally lost momentum. The rally had been supported by strong earnings and renewed optimism surrounding artificial intelligence, but mixed results from US technology companies have raised doubts about the sustainability of this week’s rebound in the sector. Domestically, state-backed purchases have increasingly shifted toward technology and growth stocks, reflecting Beijing’s efforts to strengthen domestic technological capabilities and support equity-market financing. Technology stocks led the declines, particularly Zhongji Innolight (-8.8%), Eoptolink Technology (-12.3%) and Victory Giant Technology (-5.3%). Other decliners included China Merchants Bank (-1.1%), Foxconn Industrial Internet (-3.6%) and Ping An Insurance (-0.5%).
