China Vows Retaliation Over Trump’s 100% Tariff Threat

Beijing has vowed to take countermeasures against Washington if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports.

On Friday, Trump responded to Beijing’s latest export controls by announcing additional 100% tariffs on US-bound Chinese exports, along with new export restrictions on critical software, set to take effect by November 1.

The escalating tensions threaten to derail months of progress in trade negotiations.

“Resorting to threats of high tariffs is not the right way to engage with China,” a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said on Sunday, in Beijing's first official response to the threat, as reported by CNN.

“If the US persists in acting unilaterally, China will resolutely take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson added.

“Our position on a tariff war remains consistent — we do not want one, but we are not afraid of one.”

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) will continue to implement a moderately loose monetary policy in 2026 and will utilize tools such as reserve requirement ratio (RRR) cuts and interest rate reductions to ensure sufficient liquidity, according to central bank governor Pan Gongsheng, as reported by Xinhuanet. Monetary policy will focus on promoting stable economic growth and a reasonable recovery in prices, using both incremental and existing measures to create a favorable monetary and financial environment for high-quality development and the stable operation of financial markets, Pan told Xinhua in an interview. “There is still room for further RRR and interest rate cuts this year,” he said, adding that the PBOC will work to ensure the effective implementation and supervision of interest rate policies to keep overall financing costs at a low level. The central bank will also seek to enhance the flexibility of its monetary policy tools.
