China Renounces WTO Developing Country Benefits

Beijing announced on Tuesday it will no longer seek benefits tied to its developing country status at the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to state media Xinhua and the WTO Director-General.
Premier Li Qiang stated during a UN General Assembly side meeting in New York that China will forgo access to Special and Differential Treatment (SDT) in both current and future WTO agreements.
The move addresses long-standing U.S.
concerns that major economies like China and Saudi Arabia unfairly benefit from SDT provisions—such as higher tariffs and subsidies—while self-identifying as developing countries.
Washington had argued that meaningful WTO reform was impossible until such advantages were relinquished
