China has officially approved imports of Brazilian sorghum, with shipments potentially starting this year—sooner than expected, according to Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry, as quoted by Reuters.
The move offers China an alternative to declining U.S.
sorghum exports, which have plunged amid escalating trade tensions.
The approval was confirmed in a letter from China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC), following an August visit by Chinese officials to Brazilian sorghum producers.
Although Brazilian farming groups previously said they didn’t expect to export the current crop, the deal reflects deepening ties since President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Brasilia in November 2024, which elevated bilateral relations.
As one official noted, “Brazilian sorghum is eligible for shipment,” signaling a strategic shift in China’s sourcing amid deteriorating U.S.-China trade dynamics.
