Ibovespa Gains as Petrobras and Vale Rally

The Ibovespa edged 0.1% higher to close at 167,927 on Thursday, supported by gains in commodity-related stocks.

Petrobras rose 2.8%, tracking a strong increase in oil futures, which also boosted PRIO, up 0.8%.

Oil prices continued to rise as the war with Iran appeared increasingly far from a resolution after US President Donald Trump announced a package of measures aimed at hurting Iran’s economy.

Vale jumped 2.6%, despite a decline in Chinese iron ore futures.

Steelmakers, however, remained under pressure amid expectations of a possible agreement between Canada and the US that could lead to lower US tariffs on Canadian steel, making Brazilian companies less competitive.

Gerdau fell 2.5%.

Banks struggled as bond yields moved higher on energy-driven inflation concerns.

Banco do Brasil fell 0.2%, Bradesco dropped 1.7% and Itaú lost 2.2%.

Elsewhere, Ultrapar gained 1.1% after brokerages raised their price targets.

Marcopolo rose 6.5% following a share buyback and dividend announcement.

Ibovespa Rebounds After Eleven-Day Losing Streak
The Ibovespa rose 0.9% to close at 167,830 on Wednesday, rebounding from eleven consecutive days of losses amid a stabilization in global bond yields. Yields in major economies declined after the US Treasury said it would double long-term security buybacks. Financials were mostly higher, with Itaú up 0.5%, Banco do Brasil adding 1.6% and B3 rising 0.8%. Petrobras gained 1.2% as oil futures rose for a fourth consecutive session amid fading prospects for a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East. Vale rose 0.8% amid iron ore supply concerns following failed wage negotiations between BHP and workers in Port Hedland, while CSN Mineração gained 2.2%. Meanwhile, steelmakers posted losses, with Gerdau tumbling 5.2% and CSN down 2.4%. Axia added 1.8% following its share buyback results and a buy recommendation from Itaú BBA. Embraer erased earlier gains after Itaú BBA raised its price target, closing 0.2% lower. Other notable performers included Rede D’Or (+2.6%) and Sabesp (+1%).
