The Ibovespa edged lower to trade around 167,500 on Thursday as oil prices rose, increasing inflationary pressures.

Crude prices jumped after US President Donald Trump announced a package of measures aimed at hurting Iran’s economy.

Bond yields moved higher, weighing on financial stocks and the broader market.

Itaú and B3 fell 0.5% each, while Itaúsa and Banco do Brasil shed nearly 1%.

Meanwhile, iron ore prices in China closed lower amid persistently weak steel demand, dragging Vale and CSN Mineração down 1% each.

Steelmakers also posted losses, with Gerdau falling about 5%.

Other notable laggards included Axia (-1%), WEG (-1%), and Embraer (-1%).

In contrast, Petrobras helped limit the index’s losses, rising 1% on higher oil prices.

Yields in major economies declined after the US Treasury said it would double long-term security buybacks. Financials were mostly higher, with Itaú up 0.5%, Banco do Brasil adding 1.6% and B3 rising 0.8%. Petrobras gained 1.2% as oil futures rose for a fourth consecutive session amid fading prospects for a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East. Vale rose 0.8% amid iron ore supply concerns following failed wage negotiations between BHP and workers in Port Hedland, while CSN Mineração gained 2.2%. Meanwhile, steelmakers posted losses, with Gerdau tumbling 5.2% and CSN down 2.4%. Axia added 1.8% following its share buyback results and a buy recommendation from Itaú BBA.
