Brazil Retail Sales Decline in July

Brazil's retail sales fell 0.8% month-over-month in July 2026, following a 0.5% rise in June. Five of the eight sectors posted declines, led by furniture and household appliances (-4.9%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-4.2%), textiles, clothing and footwear (-2.7%), other personal and household goods (-2.2%), and hypermarkets and supermarkets (-0.2%). Three sectors grew, led by pharmaceutical and perfumery products (0.6%), office, IT and communication equipment (0.6%), and fuels and lubricants (0.3%). Sales fell in 20 of Brazil's 27 states, led by Amapá and Tocantins (-2.5% each) and Mato Grosso (-2.2%). In contrast, expanded retail sales increased 0.4%, following a 1.1% decline in June.

Four sectors posted growth, led by other personal and household goods (2.4%), hypermarkets and supermarkets (1.1%), furniture and household appliances (0.4%), and pharmaceutical and perfumery products (0.2%). Four sectors declined, led by books, newspapers and stationery (-9.9%), textiles, clothing and footwear (-2.6%), fuels and lubricants (-1.7%), and office, IT and communication equipment (-1.3%). Sales increased in 19 of Brazil's 27 states, led by Amazonas (3.0%), Espírito Santo (2.6%) and Roraima (2.5%). In contrast, expanded retail sales fell 1.0% month-on-month after declining 0.3% in May.

Brazil's retail sales volume rose 0.1% month-over-month in May 2026, rebounding from a 1.6% decline in the previous month, but missing market expectations of a 0.5% increase. Among retail categories, the strongest monthly gains were recorded in books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (15.2%), textiles, apparel, and footwear (3.1%), furniture and household appliances (2.7%), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (1.4%), and fuels and lubricants (1.1%). The largest declines were seen in office equipment, IT and communications (-1.7%), supermarkets, food, beverages, and tobacco (-1.5%), and other personal and household goods (-0.3%). Broad retail sales, which include vehicles, construction materials, and wholesale food, beverages, and tobacco, fell 0.2% in May from April, following a 0.7% decline in the previous month. On an annual basis, retail sales rose 0.4%, slowing from a 1.0% increase in April.
