Brazil Retail Sales Rise in June

Brazilian retail sales volume rose 0.1% month-over-month in August 2026, following a 0.8% decline in July and falling short of forecasts for a 0.7% increase. Six of the eight retail categories surveyed recorded gains. Office equipment and supplies, computers and communications equipment posted the strongest increase, rising 6.3%, followed by other personal and household goods (+1.4%) and fuels and lubricants (+1.1%). Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery products rose 0.7%, fabrics, apparel and footwear increased 0.6%, and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery edged up 0.2%. In contrast, furniture and household appliances fell 4.2%, while hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco declined 0.3%. Extended retail sales, which include vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories, construction materials, and specialized wholesale trade in food, beverages and tobacco, fell 0.2%. Year-over-year, retail sales rose 0.4%, slowing from a 1.3% increase in July.

Sales fell in 20 of Brazil's 27 states, led by Amapá and Tocantins (-2.5% each) and Mato Grosso (-2.2%). In contrast, expanded retail sales increased 0.4%, following a 1.1% decline in June.

Four sectors declined, led by books, newspapers and stationery (-9.9%), textiles, clothing and footwear (-2.6%), fuels and lubricants (-1.7%), and office, IT and communication equipment (-1.3%). Sales increased in 19 of Brazil's 27 states, led by Amazonas (3.0%), Espírito Santo (2.6%) and Roraima (2.5%). In contrast, expanded retail sales fell 1.0% month-on-month after declining 0.3% in May.
