Brazil Loan Growth Picks Up

The value of outstanding loans from the Brazilian financial sector rose by 0.5% from the previous month to R$7.4 trillion in August 2026, accelerating from a 0.3% increase in July.

Loans extended to corporations edged down 0.1% to R$2.7 trillion, while household lending rose 0.8% to R$4.7 trillion.

On an annual basis, total credit expanded 9.2%, slightly below the 9.3% growth recorded in July.

Household lending continued to outpace corporate credit, rising 10.5% year-on-year from 10.6%, while lending to legal entities slowed to 7.1% from 7.3%.

Meanwhile, credit with free resources totaled R$4.1 trillion, up 0.2% from the previous month and 6.5% from a year earlier, as a 0.8% monthly increase in household credit offset a 0.6% decline in corporate lending, which nevertheless remained 0.5% higher than a year earlier.

Loans extended to corporations fell 0.7%, remaining at R$2.7 trillion, while household lending edged up 0.8%, also remaining broadly unchanged at R$4.6 trillion. On an annual basis, total credit expanded 9.5%, down from the 9.7% growth recorded in June. Household lending continued to outpace corporate credit, rising 10.8% year-on-year, while lending to legal entities slowed further to 7.4% from 7.9%. Meanwhile, credit with free resources totaled R$4.2 trillion, broadly unchanged from the prior month, although the level edged 0.1% downward from the previous month and increased 7% from a year earlier. Stronger household credit with free resources (up 1%) offset a monthly decline of 1.9% in corporate lending. Nevertheless, both remained higher than a year earlier.

Loans extended to corporations rose 1.5% to R$2.7 trillion, while household lending edged up 0.2% to R$4.6 trillion. On an annual basis, total credit expanded 9.7%, slightly above the 9.6% growth recorded in May. Household lending continued to outpace corporate credit, rising 10.8% year-on-year, although easing from 11.2%, while lending to legal entities accelerated to 7.9% from 6.9%. Meanwhile, credit with free resources totaled R$4.2 trillion, up 0.7% from the previous month and 7.5% from a year earlier, as stronger corporate lending partly offset a monthly decline in household credit, which nevertheless remained higher than a year earlier.
