South African Rand at 2-Week High

2026-11-04 14:26 By Luisa Carvalho 1 min. read

The South African rand strengthened to around 16.5 per USD, reaching a two-week high, boosted by firmer precious metals prices as the dollar weakened following the US midterm election results.

The currency also benefited from lower oil prices as South Africa is a net oil importer.

A Democratic victory was seen as potentially challenging President Trump's political and economic agenda and influencing US foreign relations, particularly towards Iran.

Relations between Washington and Pretoria have deteriorated since Trump returned to the White House last year.

Most recently, the US announced plans to remove South Africa from AGOA preferences from next year, citing unspecified concerns over the country's practices, thus putting key export sectors, particularly autos and agriculture, at risk.

Meanwhile, South Africans are voting in local elections, which are expected to test support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and could shape future coalition arrangements.

South African Rand Firms Slightly
The South African rand edged up to around 16.6 against the US dollar, recovering some ground but remaining close to its weakest level since late July. The currency found support from a weaker greenback and firmer precious metals prices, which improved South Africa's export revenue prospects. Lower oil prices also provided relief, given the country's reliance on imported crude oil and petroleum products, helping to ease inflationary pressures. However, global uncertainty and domestic economic challenges continue to cloud the outlook. Domestically, inflation quickened to 4.5% in September and is expected to accelerate further in October, driven by fuels. Inflation has remained above the South African Reserve Bank's 3% target since March. Meanwhile, Governor Lesetja Kganyago recently expressed confidence that the current monetary policy stance would bring inflation back towards the 3% target once the initial shocks triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East fade.

South African Rand at Near 3-Month Low
The South African rand traded around 16.7 per USD, nearing its lowest level since July, pressured by the dollar's relative strength and lower prices of key precious metals such as gold and PGMs. Elevated oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty added to the headwinds, increasing costs for energy-importing economies such as South Africa and complicating central banks’ policy decisions. However, domestic fiscal developments provided a counterweight to external pressures, with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) signalling continued progress towards fiscal consolidation and earning a favourable response from major credit rating agencies. Meanwhile, South Africa’s annual inflation edged up to 4.5% in September from 4.4% in August, below expectations of 4.7%, but is expected to rise again in October. Despite improved inflation prospects following November fuel tax relief, persistent price pressures leave the SARB’s next move uncertain.
