The South African rand traded around 16.7 per USD, its lowest since early October, pressured by a firmer greenback and lower prices of key precious metals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGMs).
Elevated oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty added to the headwinds, increasing costs for energy-importing economies such as South Africa and complicating central banks’ policy decisions.
However, domestic fiscal developments provided a counterweight to external pressures, with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) signalling continued progress towards fiscal consolidation and earning a favourable response from major credit rating agencies.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s annual inflation edged up to 4.5% in September from 4.4% in August, below expectations of 4.7%, but is expected to rise again in October.
Despite improved inflation prospects following November fuel tax relief, persistent price pressures leave the SARB’s next move uncertain.
