2026-10-19 22:49 By Chusnul Chotimah 1 min. read

The NZX 50 was almost flat, trading around 13,657 in Tuesday morning deals, after losses in the previous two sessions, as gains in the tech and healthcare sectors were offset by declines in utilities and real estate.

Traders were cautious ahead of the release of Q3 inflation data due this week, which could guide the RBNZ's interest rate decision.

Caution also stemmed from rising oil prices, raising concerns about inflation and interest rate hikes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The broader index attempted to rebound from its lowest level since September 16, touched a day earlier, tracking an upbeat session on Wall Street overnight, supported by a rebound in the tech sector.

F&C Investment rose 1.8%, Infratil climbed 1.3%, Fisher & Paykel gained 0.6%, and Mainfreight increased 0.5%, while Mercury NZ dropped 0.7%, and ANZ Group and A2 Milk each fell 0.5%.

NZX 50 Extends Losses, Ends at 4-Week Low
The NZX 50 shed 102 points, or 0.7%, to close at 13,652 on Monday, extending losses from the previous session and touching its lowest level since September 16. The index tracked a decline on Wall Street on Friday amid a continued tech sell-off. Traders were cautious ahead of the release of Q3 inflation data due this week, which could guide the RBNZ's interest rate decision. Fresh data also pressured sentiment, as New Zealand's trade deficit widened sharply in September, with imports rising more than exports. However, private sector figures for September capped the fall, as private sector growth hit a three-month high. Strong Chinese data and easing expectations of Fed rate hikes also helped limit the decline. The financials, communication services, and energy sectors mainly weighed on the index, with the biggest decliners being Infratil (-5.1%), Chorus (-3.1%), Colonial Motor (-2.7%), Mainfreight (-2.5%), and EBOS Group (-2.3%).
