Germany’s current account surplus widened to EUR 34.1 billion in March 2025, up from EUR 29.5 billion a year earlier.
It was the largest current account surplus on record, driven by a higher primary income surplus, which rose to EUR 19.9 billion from EUR 15.7 billion, and a narrower services deficit of EUR 3.0 billion, down from EUR 3.3 billion.
The goods surplus edged down slightly to EUR 22.4 billion from EUR 23.5 billion, as imports grew by 4.3% while exports increased at a slower pace of 2.5%.
Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit narrowed to EUR 5.2 billion from EUR 6.4 billion.
For the first quarter of 2025 as a whole, however, the current account surplus declined to EUR 75.3 billion from EUR 82.7 billion in the same period of 2024.
