2026-10-20 16:14 By Andre Joaquim 1 min. read

European stock indices rebounded from session lows but still closed below the flatline on Tuesday as losses for heavyweight tech and industrial names offset gains in other sectors.

The Euro STOXX 50 dropped 0.4% to 6,124 and the STOXX Europe 600 eased 0.1% to 639.

ASML fell 2.2%, reigniting its recent volatility after the disappointing IPO of AI-infrastructure developer Elice in Seoul signaled that markets are growing skeptical of the AI sector's increasing need for financing.

Likewise, companies with exposure to data center operations declined, with Siemens, Schneider, and Siemens Energy dropping by up to 3.3%.

On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies closed sharply higher, with Sanofi adding 3% while Argenx surged 6%.

European Stocks Poised to Open Lower
European equity markets were set to open lower on Tuesday, extending the previous session’s losses as renewed selling in global technology and artificial intelligence stocks dampened investor sentiment. Rising oil prices further heightened concerns over inflation and the outlook for interest rates. Meanwhile, investors continued to monitor geopolitical risks across Europe as governments worked to contain widespread unrest over inadequate public services and the rising cost of living, which turned violent over the weekend. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde also warned that rising bond yields, driven by concerns over government debt, could weigh on economic growth and inflation. In premarket trading, Euro Stoxx 50 futures fell 0.7%, while Stoxx 600 futures declined 0.5%.
