2026-08-18 07:28 By Agna Gabriel 1 min. read

European stocks moved lower on Tuesday, with both the Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 slipping around 0.3% as markets pulled back further from recent record highs.

Sentiment weakened after the US-Iran ceasefire expired and Tehran signaled a tougher military stance, raising concerns about renewed instability in the Middle East.

Brent crude climbed toward $91 a barrel, increasing fears that higher energy costs could reignite inflation, while rising government bond yields added further pressure on equities.

Basic resources stocks declined alongside weaker gold prices, whereas energy shares benefited from the rise in crude.

Among major companies, ASML fell about 1.5% and Siemens lost 0.9%.

In the UK, unemployment remained at 4.9% in the three months through June, slightly above expectations, while payroll employment increased by 83,000, below forecasts.

Average weekly earnings rose 4.1% year-on-year.

Investors now await ZEW sentiment surveys from Germany and the Euro Area.

European Stocks Set for Lower Open
European equity markets were set to open lower on Tuesday, extending their retreat from record highs as global bond yields surged amid mounting fiscal and inflation concerns across major economies. The Eurozone 10-year sovereign bond yield climbed above 3.2%, its highest level in 15 years, while benchmark 10-year yields in Germany and France also reached multi-year highs. The moves came as oil prices advanced further on fading hopes for a diplomatic resolution to the Middle East conflict and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, investors will assess UK jobs data, along with the Eurozone and Germany’s ZEW Economic Sentiment surveys, for fresh clues on the region’s economic health. There are no major earnings releases in Europe on Tuesday. In premarket trade, Euro Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 futures fell 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.

European Stocks Ease Further
European stocks closed marginally lower on Monday as the sustained increase in energy prices added to macroeconomic headwinds for the European economy. The Euro STOXX 50 eased 0.1% to 6,530 and the STOXX Europe 600 dropped 0.2% to 656. European natural gas prices extended their surge toward multi-year highs as the prolonged blockade of LNG tankers from the Middle East magnified shortages in renewable power generation in the central part of the continent, as low river-tides forced multiple nuclear power plants to shut down. Yields in major economies rose to multi-decade highs, pressuring banks consumer-sensitive luxury companies. Santander, Deutsche Bank, LVMH, and Adidas lost between 1% and 3.4%. On the other hand, ASML rose 2.6%, tracking US AI companies following strong results from Anthropic. Also, Argenx surged 1% after reporting a successful trial for its drug Vyvgart.
